A company sports day can offer a welcome change of pace: people moving around, trying something together and talking with colleagues they rarely spend time with.

The starting point is the group. Some people will welcome a competitive match. Others will prefer a simple challenge, a new activity or a more relaxed afternoon. A well-planned experience gives those preferences room without splitting everyone into “athletes” and spectators.

Choose a mix people can enjoy

Pickleball is one option worth considering. USA Pickleball describes it as easy to learn, with singles and doubles formats and opportunities for casual or competitive play. A hosted introduction could give beginners time to practise before joining short games. USA Pickleball.

A broader program could also include soccer passing and target challenges, putting games or lawn games. These are possible activities to assess against the audience, space and available instruction, rather than a fixed package.

Choose a manageable selection. People should have time to settle into an activity, enjoy it and meet someone new before moving on.

Keep people involved throughout the day

The format matters as much as the sport.

Short rounds and rotating partners can create opportunities to mix departments. Shared challenges can ask a group to improve its own score. Optional competitive rounds can give enthusiastic players something to aim for.

Avoid building the whole afternoon around elimination. Someone who loses an early match should still have a worthwhile activity available.

For example, a group might move between introductory pickleball, a team accuracy challenge and a relaxed lawn-game area, then come together for food and conversation. The exact combination would depend on the setting and participants.

Make hospitality part of the experience

The welcome, breaks and shared meal deserve the same attention as the activities.

Give guests somewhere comfortable to sit, talk and watch. Keep refreshments easy to find. Allow enough time between games for people to enjoy being together without constantly listening for the next instruction.

A sports day can suit staff appreciation, a cross-department gathering or an active part of a company offsite. Decide which purpose matters most before adding presentations or facilitated discussions.

Use the activity to support the team’s objective

When leadership or collaboration is part of the brief, a short discussion can draw on something participants actually experienced.

How did a pair adjust to different abilities? What helped a new player join in? How did the group respond when its first approach did not work?

Keep those questions proportionate. Athletic performance does not establish leadership ability, and every game does not need a workplace lesson. For an appreciation day, enjoyment and time together may be the whole point.

Plan for different ways to participate

Ask about activity preferences and access requirements before confirming the program. Provide meaningful choices, including the option to take a break or enjoy the social side without playing.

Review surfaces, access routes, restrooms, seating, equipment and supervision with the relevant providers. Outdoor plans should account for conditions: CDC guidance recommends cooler periods where possible, gradual activity and regular hydration. CDC heat guidance.

The location should support the chosen activities and the people attending. Confirm its operating requirements and availability before invitations go out.

Build the day around your group

Sport is part of JETFUEL’s background, including sports marketing and corporate hospitality. That perspective brings attention to both the activity and the experience around it: how people arrive, participate, connect and spend their time.

JETFUEL Team Experiences are individually scoped. A sports-based day could combine introductory activities, friendly competition and hospitality, with facilitation where it serves the objective.

Bring your group size, preferred dates and the kind of day you want to create to the Project Desk.
